Ipswich, MA - Mary E. (Mitchell) Bouchie Caffrey, 80, of Ipswich, Mass., passed away peacefully at home with family by her side early Friday morning, July 5, 2019. Above all else, Mary was a devout Catholic and maintained great faith through to her final hours. She was the wife of the late Philip Bouchie and Richard Caffrey. Mary and her twin sister Marilyn Virgilio were born in Kittery, Maine, on May 24, 1939, the daughters of the late Joseph and Eleanor (Beaton) Mitchell, both of Gloucester. Mary's great-grandfather was from the Azores, Portugal. She was a Gloucester High School graduate with the Class of 1957. Out of high school Mary worked for New England Telephone as a switchboard operator. Since childhood, Mary was an active member of the Gloucester Fraternity Club, its Ladies Auxiliary and Drum Corps and held Lifetime Membership status. In her prime, she was an avid and enthusiastic bowler, playing on two local leagues! She met and married Phil Bouchie and raised four sons in Magnolia. Many summer days were spent on Long Beach with her children, enjoying the sun, surf, and friends. She spent 10 years working at The Yellow Sub Shop in Gloucester as a dedicated, dependable, and cherished associate. Mary was an endlessly devoted daughter, sister, wife, mother, and Nana. She cared for both of her parents until their passing. Mary was always exquisitely stylish and lovely in her personal appearance and in her homemaking. She was a fabulous cook and arranged parties effortlessly. Christmas was her favorite season and her Christmas Eve open houses were annual affairs to be remembered. They often lasted from dusk to dawn and anyone still there in the morning was treated to a breakfast to remember. Taking care of her family was a priority above all else. After her husband Phil died, she met Dickey. The love between them was extraordinary. During their courtship, Dickey showed his love and adoration of Mary's sons as his own and that love transcended to Mary's grandchildren as they each arrived. When they first married, they wintered in Florida. Then, they made a permanent move to the New Port Richey area where they lived for 23 years enjoying life together and traveling. After Dick's passing in 2001, Mary came back to Gloucester in 2009. After some time and some steady decline in her health, she moved in April of 2018 to Riverbend in Ipswich and her life and health turned around beautifully. Being the social butterfly that she was, she made many, many wonderful new friends and participated in all kinds of activities including crafts, musical performances and especially bingo. She would play many cards at a time with ease. The candy dish in her apartment was always full of favorite treats selected specially for each person's preference. Staff and friends alike at Riverbend, who truly loved her and had so much fun with her, appreciated her consistent small, generous, and thoughtful gestures and her sweet smile. This faith-filled, lovely lady will be greatly missed.

She is survived by three sons, David and wife Susan of N.H., Stephen and wife Mary Lou of Magnolia, Mass., and Shawn and wife Jeanine of Gloucester; twin sister Marilyn (Mitchell) Virgilio; grandchildren Ryan Pierce and wife Jill, Thomas, Stephen, Samantha and partner Mikey, and Brooke; great-grandchildren Emma and Mikayla; sister-in-law Patricia Knowlton and husband David; and many other relatives too numerous to mention whom she loved dearly. In addition to her parents, she is predeceased by her two husbands; twin babies; her son A. Philip Bouchie Jr.; and her siblings, Charlotte and Joseph.

Her visiting hours will be held in the Greely Funeral Home, 212 Washington St., on Thursday, July 11, from 4 to 7 p.m. Family and friends are cordially invited. Her funeral will be held from the funeral home on Friday, July 12, at 9:15 a.m. followed by her Mass being celebrated in Our Lady of Good Voyage Church at 10 a.m. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Mary's memory to: St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital, P.O. Box 50. Memphis, TN 38101. Online condolences may be given at:
