Glooucester - Mary Geraldine "Gerry" Oliver, 88, passed away peacefully at her home on December 10th, 2019. Gerry was the wife of Raphael "Raphie" D. Oliver Sr., with whom she shared 69 years of marriage.
Gerry lived a fulfilling life surrounded by family and friends.
Beginning in 1955, she and Raphie ran several family businesses including the Coffee Cup, Surfside Softee on Long Beach, Friend Street Market and ultimately, the Yellow Sub Shop. Given Gerry's passion for her family, she was afforded the opportunity to work with her mother, her sister and her daughter for over 20 years. Opened in 1972, The Yellow Sub Shop was a family business that spanned 40 years and 3 generations. Gerry was known for her unique sense of humor and she loved spending time with her family and friends, especially pool parties in the backyard. She was a religious education teacher and an active member of the Women's Guild at Our Lady of Good Voyage Church. She will be missed dearly by all who knew and loved her.
Gerry was predeceased by her parents, Esther and Jack Lawler and Carl McCollum, her sister Sandra Olson, her son, Raphael D. Oliver Jr. and his wife Deborah, and Carl McCollum, Jr. Left to cherish her memories are her husband Raphael "Raphie" Oliver Sr.; her daughter, Renee Nicastro and her husband Joseph A. Nicastro, Jr. and their children, Joseph A. III and Kristin Nicastro of Cumberland, RI; Blakely and Andrew Calabrese of Danvers, MA and Kaicia and Jay Pratt of Gloucester; grandchildren, Nina and Steve Gordon of Flower Mound, Texas, Raphael D. Oliver III of Quincy MA; and Gilbert R. Oliver of Denton, Texas. Gerry's 13 great-grandchildren; Tessa, Joseph IV and Carolina Nicastro; Andrew IV and Lorenzo Calabrese; Peyton, Kyla, Kamryn and Piper Pratt; Brooklyn and Delilah Gordon and Scarlett and Cordelia Oliver. She is also survived by a very special niece and Goddaughter, Melanie Olson Giles and her husband Aaron; special grand nephews and grandniece Jax, Tristan and Ariana Giles; two brothers, Dana McCollum and his wife, Karen and Steve McCollum; and a very special loving family friend, Grace Muniu of Bronx, N.Y.
The family would like to extend a heartfelt appreciation for the extraordinary care given to Gerry by Beacon Hospice, her nurse Arthur, and caregivers Charlene, Cathy and Diane.
A memorial mass will be celebrated at a later date. Family and friends are invited to a Celebration of Life at The Gloucester House Restaurant on Sunday, December 15th from 4 to 7 p.m. Arrangements are by the Greely Funeral Home, 212 Washington St. Gloucester. Online condolences may be given at:
