Gloucester - Gloucester - Mary E. Santo of Gloucester, formerly of Woburn, beloved wife of the late Frank Santo, died peacefully on July 6 with her family by her side, at the age of 91.

Mary was born and raised in Rutland, VT, the only daughter of John and Virginia (Boykin) Clark.She graduated from Mount St. Joseph Academy in Rutland and subsequently attended the Bishop DiGosbriand Hospital School of Nursing in Burlington, Vermont, where she became a Registered Nurse.On a rotation at the Boston Children's Floating Hospital, she met a handsome young sailor who would go on to become her husband and the love of her life.

Mary and Frank were married in Rutland in November, 1956. They settled in Frank's hometown of Woburn, where they raised their large and active family of six children. Mary was a loving and supportive mother to all of her children in their education, activities, sports and life decisions. In her heart family always came first and she always placed her family's needs as her priority.

In addition to her responsibilities in running the household, Mary also worked as a nurse at Choate Hospital for one night per week until her youngest child was in high school, and then she continued to work at Choate two days per week until the hospital closed. She made many friends at Choate over the years and she treasured the time that she spent as a nurse in her adopted hometown hospital.

In 1984, Mary and Frank bought land in Gloucester and they built a house close to Good Harbor Beach. It was initially a vacation home but eventually became Mary's primary residence. Over the years it became the center of family activities for Mary and Frank and their children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and any other friends, relatives or acquaintances who happened to stop in. Their door was always open and they loved it when people visited. Later in life Mary and Frank enjoyed wintering in St. Pete's Beach, Florida. Together they were a great team and they made friends wherever they went.

Mary's faith was an important part of her life – she attended Christ the King primary school in Rutland before moving on to high school at Mount St. Joseph. Mary and Frank were devoted parishioners at St. Anthony's Church in Woburn for many years. When they relocated full time to Gloucester they became parishioners at St. Ann's Church. They made many good friends, and they took great comfort from both churches over the years. Mary will always be remembered for her devotion to her family and friends and the endless love that she bestowed upon all that she cared for.

Mary was the beloved wife of 62 years to the late Frank Santo. She was the loving mother of Andrew Santo, and his wife Donna, of Woburn, Ginny Murphy, and her husband Tom, of Burlington, Kathleen Santo of Gloucester, Frank Santo Jr., and his wife Stacey, of Wellesley, James Santo, and his wife Ellen, of Beverly, and Mary Santo, and her wife Sharon Kathleen, of Gloucester. Proud grandmother of Andrew Santo and his wife Brianne, Allyson Santo, Kathleen Ammon and her husband Ted, Michaela O'Rourke and her husband Brendan, Tom Murphy and his husband Oisin Moriarty, MaryKate Murphy, Peter, Juliet and Sheridan Santo, James Santo, Ryan Santo and his fiancée Eva Gourdeau and Katherine Santo. Loving great grandmother of Andrew, Blake, Lana, Cora, Bridget, Finn, Annie and Shea. Dear sister of the late John Clark and the late Fr. Robert Clark.

Visiting hours will be held at the Lynch-Cantillon Funeral Home, 263 Main Street, Woburn, MA, on Monday, July 14, from 4 to 7 p.m. A Funeral Mass will be held on Tuesday, July 15 at 10 a.m. in St. Charles Church, 280 Main Street, Woburn. Internment in Calvary Cemetery, Woburn.
