Beverly - Beverly - Oliver T. Cook of Beverly Farms, MA, passed peacefully at home on Monday, July 1st following a long illness. Born on July 7, 1938 in Pittsburgh, PA, he was son to the late H. Calvin Cook, Ruth (Transue) Cook, and husband to Sharon (Love) Cook.
He was a graduate of The Choate School, Washington & Lee University, and the New England School of Law.
In the '60s, Cook became a partner in the Peabody law firm of Pearl, McNiff & Crean, where he remained for decades. When the building was eventually sold, he took his practice home, whereupon Sharon became his legal secretary. She earned $22.50 an hour and when he offered a raise, she'd decline, claiming she "wasn't that good." Nonetheless, in November 2024, Oliver celebrated 60 years in the practice of law.
In 1965, Cook joined the Salem Country Club, becoming one of the longest-termed members. While there, he became the "youngest club president" as well as chairman of three national tournaments. In 1994, while playing in a North Shore Chamber of Commerce tournament, he got his first hole in one. Not only that, he won the prize: a new Ford Thunderbird, donated by Thomas Ford of Beverly. Cook generously gave it to Sharon, even though she'd encouraged him not to play on that sweltering day.
Oliver loved his family and its succession of (rescued) dogs and cats. He loved his golf and handball buddies, his church and its parishioners. He cherished his clients, particularly the families he'd helped for three generations. He loved the beach and the music of Chuck Berry.
He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Sharon (Love) Cook, his children, Oliver T. Cook, Jr. and his wife, Christina of Kingston, NH, daughter Jessica L. Cook of Beverly, and granddaughter, Isabelle Cook of Kingston, NH. He leaves his sisters, Bonnie Hardy of Gloucester and Margaret Price of San Diego, CA as well as several much-loved nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his brother, H. Calvin Cook, Jr., So. Dartmouth, MA.
His funeral service will be celebrated at St. John's Episcopal Church, 705 Hale Street, Beverly Farms, on Thursday, July 10th at 11 a.m. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Oliver's memory to either: Friends of Beverly Animals, P.O. Box 3378, Beverly, MA 01915
