Richard F. Goward, Sr. Obituary

Hemet - Hemet - Richard F. Goward Sr. was deeply loved, respected, and admired. He cherished his many roles—father, son, husband, brother, grandfather, partner, and loyal friend.

Born in 1930, Richard lost his father at a young age. Growing up in Rockport, MA during the Great Depression and World War II, he took on many after-school jobs—caddying, delivering newspapers, and working in the icehouse—to help support his family.

Richard took immense pride in his Coast Guard service. Enlisting as a Seaman Recruit, he rose to the rank of Commander, serving as second in command of the USCGC Glacier, America's largest icebreaker, and undertaking several expeditions to the Arctic and Antarctic. His pioneering work with satellite communications in Antarctica earned him the distinction of having Goward Peak named in his honor.

After retiring from the Coast Guard, Richard lived and worked in Southern California, eventually retiring as Director of Information Systems at Century 21 International. No matter his position, Richard was respected and admired for his thoughtfulness, honesty and integrity.

A passionate lifelong sailor, Richard now joins his beloved wife Shirley and grandson Patrick Goward in eternal rest. He is survived by his sons Dana, Richard Jr., and Matthew, their spouses, Dana, Sheila, and Janet, as well as seven grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren, all of whom he loved dearly. Richard lived a long and joyful life and will be greatly missed. His loved ones find comfort in knowing he is at peace.

A small memorial ceremony for friends will be held on September 14th at 10 a.m. at The Village, 2200 W. Acacia Ave, Hemet, CA 92545. The family will celebrate his life privately.

To honor Richard's legacy, the family suggests donations to Scouting America (formerly Boy Scouts) at https://www.scouting.org/.
