Susan Rilla (Hurst) Jones Obituary

Gloucester - Susan "Suzy" Rilla (Hurst) Jones, 67, of Gloucester, passed away unexpectedly following a brief illness.

Born on July 27, 1958, in Gloucester, she was the daughter of Hope P. Hurst Manninen and John D. Hurst.

Suzy lived boldly, unapologetically, and entirely on her own terms. In her younger years she loved a good time, and she made many friends she kept close throughout her life. She was always ready with a home remedy, always ready with the gossip, and always ready to make someone feel seen. She will be remembered most for the way she made people feel loved. Once she became a grandmother, her world revolved around her boys. With her first grandson, Kyle, you could find her running around the playground chasing after him. When his brother Logan came along, her pride only grew- her brag book was never far from reach, filled with photos and stories of their sports achievements. In her neighborhood, Suzy was a familiar and comforting presence, walking with Sadie and later with Chico, stopping to talk with anyone who crossed her path. She loved the small moments, the small conversations, and the small connections that made life meaningful.

Suzy leaves behind her son, Joseph Jones, and his partner, Gina Testaverde, as well as her cherished grandsons, Kyle Jones and Logan Jones.

She is survived by her siblings: Gerald B. Mackillop and his wife Deborah; Ronnie L. Hurst Sr. and his longtime partner, Kelly Favazza; Sally A. Simpson; Dennis Mackillop; and Cliff Mackillop. She is also survived by her longtime friends, Kim (Kimmie) Rose of New Mexico and Gail Goldthwaite, along with many friends who span the decades, each carrying their own stories of Suzy's humor, loyalty, and unforgettable presence. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews, whom she loved dearly.

She was predeceased by her parents; her brothers John D. Mackillop and Charles "Mickey" Mackillop; her son's father and former husband, Ernest Jones Jr.; and her longtime partner, Scott Flannagan.

Services will be held on June 3 from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Campbell Funeral Home, 61 Middle Street, Gloucester, MA.

Flowers, gifts, and expressions of sympathy may be sent to 34 Reynard St., Gloucester, MA 01930, c/o Joseph Jones.
