Gloucester - Gloucester - Victoria Maxim Lindsay, of Chiapas, Mexico and Gloucester MA, passed into
the next life, early in the morning of January 22, 2025, at Beverly Hospital.
Her beloved friend Grace Schrafft was at her side.
Victoria was born in Boston on February 16, 1950, the second daughter of the late George Maxim and Betty (Baker) Lindsay. She is survived by her sister, Kristina (Lindsay) Case, and her husband, Howard Case, of San
Francisco.
Victoria grew up in San Francisco, and earned her undergraduate degree at Mills College, Oakland, and a master's degree in science from the University of California at San Francisco, majoring in physics and astronomy. A life-long learner, Vicki also studied at UC Berkeley, and at Oxford University in the United Kingdom. In Berlin, she studied the works of Bertolt Brecht. Vicki taught physics and astronomy at San Francisco State, and as a professional astronomer, she also worked for the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence Institute. It could be said of Vicki, in the words of Emily Dickinson, "Because I could not stop for Death - He kindly stopped for me -"
In recent years, Vicki became a teacher in the international Family Math program, living and teaching math in rural villages, including El Qua, Nicaragua; Johannesburg and the Drakensberg Mountains of South Africa; Palestine; and Chiapas, Mexico, where most recently, she taught math and English in a Zapatista community.
Before returning to Family Math, for 11 years Vicki was executive director of the Community Land Trust of Cape Ann, which offered affordable home ownership on community owned land. With Vicki's leadership, a dedicated coalition of volunteers: church members, bankers, the City of Gloucester, construction companies, skilled workers, and non-profit organizations contributed to the program's success. More than 50 units of affordable homes in Gloucester are now owned by moderate-income individuals and families.
Victoria's knowledge of state and federal guidelines for non-profit organizations helped the Gloucester Writers Center to become a successful community entity that has flourished for more than 11 years.
Victoria returned for medical care to Gloucester/Beverly in November, 2044. Friends and colleagues from Gloucester, to Mexico, South Africa, and the Middle East, mourn the loss of a brilliant and loving Pal.
A gathering to honor and celebrate Victoria's life will be held in July, details to be announced at a later date. All will be welcome. In memory of Vicki, Donations can be given to the Gloucester Writers Center at gloucesterwriters.org.
