formerly of Gloucester, passed away peacefully on Saturday, January 14, 2017.

He is survived by Marjorie (Bloom) Marks, his loving wife of 68 years, his son, John Marks and his wife, Cheryl, and his son Scott Marks and his wife Rhonda. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Eric Marks and his wife, Amanda, and Jesse Marks. In addition he is survived by his step-grandchildren, Jessica Sanchez and Nate Nolet, and a great-grandson, Mateya Nolet.

Bill was predeceased by his brother, Melvin Marks and sister Dorothy (Marks) Bialer.

Born in Gloucester, he was the son of the late Jacob and Ida (Alpert) Marks. A veteran of WWII, he valiantly served his country as a Yeoman First Class in the United States Navy seeing active duty in the Atlantic and Mediterranean Theatres of War. He was honorably discharged from the Navy in 1946.

Upon his return to Gloucester, he joined his father operating the North Shore Sportswear Company, a manufacturer of women’s clothing. He later opened and ran retail stores in Gloucester, Rockport, Magnolia, Ipswich, Exeter, New Hampshire and Portland, Maine, under the name The Casual Shops.

Bill was active in community affairs, both civil and religious. He was a 32 Degree Mason and served as President of the Gloucester B’Nai B’Rith Chapter.

He enjoyed golf, tennis, reading, music, theatre, travel and his beloved collie, Leader. Most of all he loved his family.

Funeral services will be held at Temple Ahavat Achim, 86 Middle St., Gloucester, on Sunday, January 22, 2017 at 12 p.m. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to Temple Ahavat Achim, 86 Middle St., Gloucester, MA 01930 or to Tidewell Hospice, Philanthropy Department, 5955 Rand Boulevard, Sarasota, FL 34238.
