Gloucester, MA - Winifred "Winnie" Hemmer, 96, wife of the late Robert "Skeets" Hemmer, passed away in the Seacoast Nursing Home in Gloucester on Feb. 17, 2020, after a period of failing health. Winnie was born in Gloucester on June 2, 1923, and was the daughter of the late Peter and Blanche (Wagner) Muise. Living in Gloucester, many will remember Winnie as a very hard worker at The Empire Clothing Store on Main St. where she had worked for 40 years. She loved her job and thoroughly enjoyed helping customers leave with the proper fitting garments. While living at Central Grammar Apartments she made many friends that lasted throughout the years. When she entered Seacoast, Winnie seldom missed any of the performances to which the residents were invited to. She especially enjoyed the State Trooper, Sgt. Dan Clark, who sang there regularly. In her final week he serenaded her to "Amazing Grace" when she was unable to leave her room to see him perform in the lobby. Accompanying him were several nurses and aides, most of whom Winnie considered as family. Winnie is survived by her special nieces, Kathy Middleton and Joanne Searcy, along with many other nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. She was predeceased by her sisters Rose Nunes and Doris Roberts; and her brothers Richard, Peter, and William Muise.
The family would like to thank caregivers, Lexi and Jackie, as well as all the caring staff and nurses of Seacoast who took such loving and compassionate care of Winnie. Winnie's favorite charity was St. Jude and she made numerous donations to assist the many children that were being helped there. So, in lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in her memory to: St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, P.O. Box 50, Memphis, TN 38101, or at www.stjude.org.
A graveside service will be held Fri., Feb. 21, 2020, at 11 a.m. in Calvary Cemetery in Gloucester. Family and friends are cordially invited. Arrangements are by the Greely Funeral Home, 212 Washington St., Gloucester. Please visit www.greelyfuneralhome.com.

One of my very favorite aunts. You always brought so much sunshine to a room with your presence, your red hair, beautiful face and great smile. Sleep now with your little brother Richard (your worry these last yrs) until we see you all again. xo

I remember going into empire to get a dress for a funeral for a family member. I was a little emotional and she was so nice and empathetic. She found me a dress.

So sorry for your loss, but you have an Angel to look over the family. I so enjoyed chatting with Winnie at the Empire store for many years.

I have a lot a fond memories of Winnie as I was one of her co-workers back in the 70’s when I worked at Empire. She and Skeets were two very special people. You are now back in his arms! Rest In Peace. ❤️💐
